CHENNAI PORT

Over a century now, the Chennai Port has developed into one of the most modern ports in the country, matching international standards, specially in container handling. The first modern container terminal in India was set up at this Port and today, the Chennai Port ranks third among the 11 major ports in the country in terms of the volume of cargo handled.

With modernisation and technological advancements holding the key to the success of any organisation, the Chennai Port today is fine tuning and upgrading its facilities to cater to each and every need of its users and at the same time play a major role in the economic development of the country as a whole.

Location

Chennai port is situated at a Latitude of 13o06’ North and Longitude of 80o18’ East, Chennai Port is an artificial harbour on the Coromandel coast in South-East India.

Future Plans / Privatisation

Some of the projects that are in progress at the Chennai Port include:

Bunkering of Oil, Supply of Fresh Water, Modern Navigational aids Telephone connection to vessels, Insurance lightcrage. Round the Clock Communications on the Marine VHF Channel

  • Extension of container terminal by 290 m berth length, addition of 30,000 sq. m of parking yard and one CFS;Additional equipment to be provided under privatisation include two container quay cranes, two RTG cranes,other infrastructure facilities like CFS, CPY etc. The total handling capacity on completion will be 4,72,000 TEUs.

  • Modernisation of West Quay and North Quay berths at an estimated cost of Rs 47.50 crore;
    Capacity addition to the port will be 0.95 million tonne per annum of general cargo. Project to be executed with Asian Development Bank (ADB) assistance.

  • Integrated scheme of extension of South Quay III about 73 m and modernisation of East Quay about 452 m at a cost of Rs 46.10 crore The capacity addition to the port will be 0.70 million tonne per annum of general cargo. Project to be executed with ADB assistance.

  • Modernisation of iron ore berth to handle general cargo vessels and Construction of one multi-storeyed transitshed.

  • Long term plan to handle containers and cars (four to five berths) by shifting handling of thermal coal and iron ore to Ennore Port.

EDI

The Chennai Port has entered the area of electronic data interchange (EDI) with port users. EDI connectivity has been established with 12 MLOs and Pilot project tested successfully.
